RETROACTIVE Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, 16 Vincent Street, Cessnock NSW 2325
“No past, only the present: the words we use for time are a practical handle but acts of art from thirty years ago and gestures made today exist in the same moment in this retroactive exhibition. James Whitington shows us art from over thirty years of painting, printmaking, drawing – and the exhibition is itself a living action that insists on contemplation of the now. Whitington has from the first infused his work with movement in a celebration of mind and body, using diverse textures and techniques. The handling of paints and inks on canvas, board and paper shows a love of the media themselves and their place in a shared environment. The themes and motifs of Whitington’s work are diverse and his investigations indicate an openness to adaptation and innovation. So ancient myths, Renaissance imagery, Zen calligraphy, Mimis, human energy and natural landscape are not in contention here but equally honoured.”
Official opening, Saturday 29th September at 5pm, guest speaker Richard Stern and acoustic guitar from Graham Bennett.
